Acadia University will be closed on Monday January 26, 2026 due to expected weather conditions.

All classes are cancelled for the day. Employees and students are not expected to come to campus and only employees deemed essential are required to report to work. Non-essential employees are not expected to work during the closure. Residence buildings will be accessible, and Wheelock Dining Hall will be open but at reduced hours.

Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence in Business

Speaker: Daniel Silver, PhD, CIM

Abstract:

We hear a lot about Big Data, Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence in the news. This talk is meant to clarify these terms and provide a sense of the Data Analytics process for business owners, managers and other professionals who may be considering related projects. The talk with provide an overview of Data Analytics and Big Data. We will explore the relationship between Data Analytics and Business Intelligence with an emphasis on required resources and best practices for success. Along the way you will learn the basics about Data Warehousing, Data Engineering, and Data Visualization and gain a sense of how Data Mining methods and Machine Learning technology work to develop predictive models. As time allows, we will examine current trends in Data Analytics that may have significant impact on organizations and their customers.

 

Bio: Dr. Danny Silver is the Director of the Acadia Institute for Data Analytics. He is also a Professor in and former Director of the Jodrey School of Computer Science at Acadia University. His areas of research and application are machine learning, data mining, and data analytics and has published over 65 scientific papers in the areas of Transfer Learning and Lifelong Machine Learning. He and has co-chaired or been part of program committees for a number of national and international conferences, seminars and workshops on data mining and machine learning. He was the President of the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association (CAIAC) from 2009-11. In 2011, he received the Science Champion Award from the Nova Scotia Discovery Center for his work on youth robotics and the advancement of STEM education. In December, 2013, he became an Honorary Colonel in the RCAF attached to 14 Wing Software Engineering Squadron (now the 415 Squadron), in Greenwood, NS. In June of 2016, he was awarded the Canadian AI’s Distinguished Service Award and made a CAIAC Fellow. Danny has over 30 years of experience in information technology, project management and organization administration. Since 1993, he has worked on machine learning and data mining projects in the private and public sector providing situation analysis and problem definition, project management and guidance, and data mining services.
